This bill amends Section 68075.5 of the Education Code to expand exemptions from nonresident tuition for certain veterans attending California public colleges and universities. Specifically, it clarifies that members of the U.S. Armed Forces who were stationed in California on active duty for over a year before their discharge are eligible for an exemption from paying nonresident tuition. This exemption applies for the duration they reside in the state after discharge, up to the time needed to establish residency, or for up to one year if they file an affidavit stating their intent to become a California resident as soon as possible, with this one-year exemption needing to be used within two years of discharge. The bill also explicitly states that former service members who received a dishonorable or bad conduct discharge are not eligible for these exemptions. Furthermore, the bill requests the University of California Regents to adopt a similar policy for University of California students who meet these veteran residency requirements.
