This bill amends Section 97-15-29 of the Mississippi Code of 1972 to increase the assessment for littering violations from $50 to $100. The additional $50 assessment will be deposited into the Local System Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Fund, which is used to fund local bridge replacement and rehabilitation projects. The existing $50 assessment will continue to be deposited into the Law Enforcement Officers Monument Fund, which supports a scholarship program for children of deceased or disabled law enforcement officers and firefighters. The bill also requires individuals convicted of a second or subsequent littering offense to remove or render harmless the unlawfully discarded solid waste, repair or restore any damaged property, perform community service related to litter removal or restoration, and pay investigative and prosecutorial costs. The bill takes effect on July 1, 2020.
