This bill modifies the election dates and candidate filing procedures for school district and technology center school district board of education elections. Currently, board of education general elections are held in April, but the bill changes these to occur on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Primary elections, previously held in February, will now take place on the fourth Tuesday of August. The bill also adjusts candidate filing dates, moving the filing period from the first Monday in December to the first Wednesday in April, with specific time constraints (no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and no later than 5:00 p.m. on the following Friday). The legislation maintains the existing rules for candidate qualification, such as requiring a candidate to receive more than 50% of votes in a primary election to be elected outright, or having the top two candidates advance to the general election if no candidate meets the 50% threshold. Candidates must still file declarations of candidacy with the same officials as county office candidates and affirm their eligibility. The bill will become effective on November 1, 2026, giving school districts and election officials ample time to prepare for the new election schedule.
