This bill, effective July 1, 2014, prohibits the state or any local government from using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, for traffic law enforcement purposes. Furthermore, any information gathered by a UAV will not be allowed as evidence in court unless it was obtained with a search warrant or in a way that complies with both state and federal laws. The bill also mandates that the Department of Public Safety, in collaboration with the Attorney General and other relevant groups, will study potential changes to Iowa's criminal code regarding UAV use, create model guidelines for their operation, and present these findings to the state legislature by December 31, 2014.
