This bill amends chapter 12 of Title 16 of the Revised Statutes, concerning the incorporation and governance of congregations and parishes of the Protestant Episcopal Church in New Jersey, to change gender-specific language to gender-neutral language. Among other provisions, the bill changes the term "chairman" to "chairperson," changes "vestrymen" to "vestrymembers," and eliminates the word "he" from the statute's references to "minister," "bishop," "rector," and "secretary." The bill also makes certain technical corrections. Title 16 of the Revised Statutes ("Corporations and Associations, Religious") concerns the incorporation and governance of specified religious groups. The enumerated groups include, among others, the Baptist and Seventh-Day Baptist Churches (R.S.16:2-1 et seq.); the Church of Christ, Scientist (R.S.16:3-1 et seq.); the United Presbyterian Church (R.S.16:11-1 et seq.); the Protestant Episcopal Church (R.S.16:12-1 et seq.); the Roman Catholic Church (R.S.16:15-1 et seq.); and the New Jersey State Association of Spiritualists (R.S.16:17-1 et seq.).
