In January of 2006, the Legislature approved P.L.2005, c.306 (C.5:18-1 et seq.) to mandate that a child who wears corrective eyeglasses while participating in certain sports sponsored by a school, community, or government agency is required to wear protective eyewear that meets the frame standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F803 and the lens standards of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z87.1. The law includes a provision which grants immunity from liability to a school, community, or government agency engaged in organizing, teaching, refereeing, or coaching a sports activity for failure to administer or enforce the provisions of the law. This bill extends that immunity to a nonprofit association or member of such an association that is similarly engaged in organizing, teaching, refereeing, or coaching a sports activity, such as the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association and the New Jersey High School Tennis Officials Association among others.
