This bill allows certain emergency squad volunteers holding municipal elective office to vote on emergency squad concerns. Small municipalities often have difficulties finding enough people to effectively staff volunteer fire companies and emergency squads. Municipal elective officers in such communities should not be discouraged from volunteering time to these companies and squads. Presently, requirements for elective officers to recuse themselves from voting on matters concerning a volunteer company or squad they belong to are discouraging sufficient participation in these critical local service providers. In municipalities below 5,000 in population, this bill would require recusal from voting on a matter concerning a volunteer squad or company only for those elective officials who serve as an officer, director, or trustee of the squad or company.
