This bill prohibits discrimination in housing against individuals based on their lawful source of income, such as Social Security, public assistance, or rental assistance. The bill amends the Rhode Island Fair Housing Practices Act to include lawful source of income as a protected characteristic, alongside existing protections for race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, military status, country of ancestral origin, disability, age, and familial status. However, the bill provides an exemption for owners of housing accommodations with three units or less, one of which is occupied by the owner, who can refuse to rent to a person based on their lawful source of income.
