This Resolution urges and requests the Louisiana Department of Health to conduct a study on whether to classify Mitragyna speciosa, commonly known as kratom, as a controlled dangerous substance, which refers to a drug or other substance that is regulated by the government due to its potential for abuse or addiction. This action is prompted by concerns raised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has warned consumers against using kratom, stating there are no approved uses for it and highlighting potential risks of toxicity and even death associated with its consumption, while also acknowledging existing Louisiana law that prohibits distributing kratom to minors. The Department of Health is required to submit a report of its findings and recommendations to the House Committee on Administration of Criminal Justice at least 60 days before the start of the 2019 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature.
