This bill allows retired judicial officers to avoid the limit on temporary employment payments under certain circumstances. Specifically, it allows a retired judge or justice who is assigned to temporary employment by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals to receive per diem and retirement compensation in excess of the salary of a sitting judge, but only when the Chief Justice has determined that exigent circumstances, such as a protracted illness, lengthy suspension, or extended absence of a sitting judicial officer, require a term of temporary employment that would cause the retirant's annual compensation to exceed $20,000.
