This bill creates a new criminal offense for the failure to report the loss or theft of a firearm within five days of becoming aware of the loss or theft. It also requires the clerk of the court to provide written notice to the Department of Public Safety when a person is convicted of or placed on deferred adjudication for the new offense. Additionally, the bill amends the requirements for obtaining a license to carry a handgun, making the failure to report a lost or stolen firearm a disqualifying offense. The bill applies only to firearms lost or stolen on or after the effective date of September 1, 2019.
