Bill Summary

A bill to amend title 49, United States Code, to require the development of public transportation operations safety risk reduction programs, and for other purposes. This bill requires grant recipients under the public transportation safety program who operate a fixed route bus service to (1) develop a risk reduction program for bus operations to improve safety by reducing the number and rates of accidents, injuries, assaults on bus operators, and fatalities; (2) submit the program to the Department of Transportation (DOT) for review and approval; and (3) implement the approved program. DOT shall require grant recipients who operates a rail fixed guideway public transportation system that is not subject to regulation by the Federal Railroad Administration to (1) develop a risk reduction program for assaults on rail workers to improve safety by reducing the number and severity of assaults on such workers; (2) submit the program to DOT for review and approval; and (3) implement the approved program. A grant recipient shall report to DOT any information on each assault on a transit worker for inclusion in the National Transit Database.
