This bill would establish the Truck Driver Training Fund, to be administered by the Board of Higher Education, to support training and education programs that address workforce shortages of truck drivers in the commercial transportation industry. The bill would create a grant program, funded by the Truck Driver Training Fund, to support regional partnerships, address critical workforce shortages, improve employment opportunities for underrepresented groups, provide training and educational services, boost instructor capacity, and support succession planning and worker retention strategies. The bill would also impose a $5 surcharge on applications for or renewal of commercial driver's licenses, with the funds going to the Truck Driver Training Fund. Additionally, the bill would require the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to provide information to learner's permit applicants about careers as truck drivers and diesel mechanics.
