This bill seeks to provide retirement benefits for certain veterans in Massachusetts. It allows veterans who retired prior to July 24, 1996 and served in the armed forces of the United States to receive credit for up to four years of active military service towards their retirement, with some exceptions. The bill also allows National Guard and Active Reserve personnel who are veterans to apply their guard or reserve service towards retirement on a ratio of five years of guard or reserve service for each year of active service. The provisions of the bill can be adopted by local retirement systems through a majority vote of the board and the local legislative body.
