This bill establishes a program for the administration of medications by certified medication aides in long-term care facilities in Massachusetts. The bill defines a certified medication aide as a staff member who meets eligibility requirements, completes the necessary training and competency testing developed by the Department of Public Health, and is deemed competent to administer medications to residents. The Department is tasked with creating the program, developing training curricula and competency evaluation procedures, setting standards for certification, and establishing regulations for continuing education, recertification, and certification fees. Importantly, the provisions of this bill are not mandatory for long-term care facilities or employees, and facilities cannot require their employees to become certified medication aides as a condition of employment.
