This bill amends the Civil Practice Law and Rules to increase the value of homesteads that are exempt from civil judgments from $150,000 to $250,000 for the counties of Kings, Queens, New York, Bronx, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, Westchester, and Putnam. The exemption is also increased to $125,000 for the counties of Dutchess, Albany, Columbia, Orange, Saratoga, and Ulster, and to $75,000 for the remaining counties of the state. The bill provides that the exemption applies to lots of land with a dwelling, shares of stock in a cooperative apartment corporation, units of a condominium apartment, or a mobile home that is occupied as the principal residence. The bill also outlines the procedures for a judgment creditor to seek the sale of a homestead that exceeds the exemption value.
