This bill amends the Health and Safety Code and Occupations Code to allow for the cremation of human remains through alkaline hydrolysis, in addition to the existing method of cremation through direct flame and extreme heat. The bill defines "cremation" to include the process of reducing human remains to essential elements, including bone fragments, through either extreme heat and evaporation or alkaline hydrolysis. The bill also defines "crematory" to include facilities that use alkaline hydrolysis. The Texas Funeral Service Commission is required to adopt rules by December 1, 2019 to implement the changes in this law.
