Bill Summary

A bill to amend title 38, United States Code, to furnish hospital care and medical services to veterans, members of the reserve components of the Armed Forces, and dependents who were stationed at military installations at which they were exposed to perfluorooctanoic acid or other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, to provide for a presumption of service connection for those veterans and members of the reserve components, and for other purposes. This bill requires hospital care and medical services to be furnished for specified conditions to veterans and reservists who were exposed to perfluorooctanoic acid and other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (commonly referred to as PFAS) while serving on military installations. Family members of veterans and reservists who resided at these military installations are also eligible for hospital care and medical services under this bill. The bill also provides a presumption of service connection for veterans and reservists who were exposed to such substances. Under a presumption of service connection, specific conditions diagnosed in veterans are presumed to have been caused by the circumstances of their military service. Health care benefits and disability compensation may then be awarded.

AI Summary

This bill, the Veterans Exposed to Toxic PFAS Act or the VET PFAS Act, requires the provision of hospital care and medical services to veterans, reservists, and their dependents who were exposed to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) while stationed at certain military installations. The bill establishes a presumption of service connection for specific health conditions related to PFOA and PFAS exposure, allowing veterans and reservists to more easily obtain health care benefits and disability compensation. The bill also directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to submit annual reports on the care and services provided under these new provisions.
