Bill Summary

This bill revises the provisions of the "Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act," P.L.1999, c.23 (C.48:3-51 et al.) to include fusion within the definition of Class I renewable energy. Although electricity generation from nuclear fusion has not yet been achieved, experts predict that fusion reactors will not produce air pollutants or carbon dioxide. In addition, fusion reactors will cause radioactivity that is of lesser magnitude and shorter duration than that produced by nuclear fission reactors. New Jersey is home to the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), one of the foremost centers for fusion energy research in the world.

AI Summary

This bill revises the "Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act" to include fusion within the definition of Class I renewable energy. Fusion energy, which has not yet been achieved but is predicted to produce electricity without air pollutants or significant radioactivity, will now be recognized as a renewable energy source in New Jersey. This change supports the research being conducted at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, one of the world's leading fusion energy research centers, located in the state.
