Bill Summary

Ensuring consumer choice and equal access to eye care

AI Summary

This bill expands the scope of practice for registered optometrists in Massachusetts. It allows optometrists who are qualified and certified to use and prescribe a broader range of therapeutic pharmaceutical agents, including those used to diagnose, prevent, correct, manage, or treat glaucoma and other ocular abnormalities. The bill also establishes an examination and certification process for optometrists to demonstrate their qualifications to use and prescribe these expanded treatments. Additionally, the bill requires optometrists to refer patients to licensed physicians or other qualified health care providers if they encounter signs of diseases that require treatment outside the scope of optometry.
