This bill directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to designate a Countering Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Coordinator to coordinate with relevant DHS offices and other federal agencies on the development of policies and plans to counter threats associated with UAS, such as drones that could be used in terrorist attacks. The Coordinator will also promote research and development of counter-UAS technologies, ensure the dissemination of information and guidance related to countering UAS threats, serve as the point of contact for federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement entities and the private sector on the Department's UAS-related activities, and carry out other related UAS activities as directed by the Secretary of Homeland Security. Additionally, the Coordinator will coordinate with relevant offices to ensure any testing, evaluation, or deployment of systems used to identify, assess, or defeat UAS is done in accordance with applicable federal laws, and will serve as the principal DHS official responsible for disseminating information regarding counter-UAS technology to the private sector.
