This bill expands the eligibility period for indigent legal service attorneys to receive certain loan forgiveness from 6 years to 7 years after completion of the second year of employment. It also increases the maximum annual loan reimbursement for these attorneys from $3,400 to $5,500 per qualifying year, subject to available funding. The bill also broadens the definition of "eligible attorney" to include law school graduates awaiting bar admission who are employed by prosecuting agencies, criminal defense agencies, and/or non-profit indigent civil legal services corporations. The changes will take effect on April 1, 2020 and will not diminish the current awards or status of eligible attorneys already participating in the program.
