This bill amends the existing laws in Virginia to allow for the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use. The bill specifies that the possession of controlled substances other than marijuana remains unlawful, except when obtained through a valid prescription or other authorized means. The bill also provides exceptions for law enforcement, jail, and correctional officers in the performance of their duties. Additionally, the bill permits the possession or distribution of marijuana or tetrahydrocannabinol for medical purposes when prescribed by a medical doctor for the treatment of cancer or glaucoma, and protects medical doctors and pharmacists from prosecution for dispensing or distributing such substances for these medical purposes.
