Bill Summary

This bill provides that a student cannot be denied admittance to school due to tardiness. The bill also provides that a student cannot be denied admittance to school due to a violation of a school uniform policy or dress code policy, except in the case of a violation of section 2 of P.L.1996, c.93 (C. 18A:11-9). That section of law allows a board of education to adopt a dress code policy that prohibits students from wearing clothing, apparel, or accessories indicating membership in, or affiliation with, any gang associated with criminal activities.

AI Summary

This bill prohibits public schools from denying admittance to students due to tardiness or for violating a school uniform policy or dress code, except in cases where the school has a dress code policy that prohibits students from wearing clothing, apparel, or accessories indicating membership in or affiliation with a gang associated with criminal activities. The bill also allows boards of education or charter school boards to adopt a dress code policy requiring students to wear a school uniform, but requires them to provide a method for parents to opt out of the policy and prohibits penalizing or discriminating against students whose parents choose not to comply with the policy.
