Bill Summary

AN ACT ENTITLED An Act to revise requirements regarding hunting mentors.

AI Summary

This bill revises the requirements for the hunting mentoring program in South Dakota. It allows a child under the age of 16 who is a state resident to hunt without a hunting license if accompanied by a qualified hunting mentor, who must be the child's parent/guardian or another competent adult with written consent. The mentor must have completed a hunter safety course, possess a valid hunting license, and provide direct supervision and responsibility over the child during the hunt. The bill also sets limits on the number of mentored children and total hunters in a party, as well as the types of big game that can be hunted by a mentored child. Additionally, the bill grants the Game, Fish and Parks Commission the authority to establish further rules and criteria for the hunting mentoring program.
