This bill provides a local government option for the funding of essential affordable housing programs. It allows cities and towns to levy and collect a special excise tax of up to 10% on the furnishing of short-term rental lodging subject to the state sales tax. The revenue from this tax must be used exclusively for the operating and capital costs of affordable housing programs, including homeless housing assistance, temporary shelters, and other related services. The bill also amends existing laws to exclude this new tax from the calculation of the total sales tax rate limit on lodging.
