This Concurrent Resolution proposes to amend the Mississippi Constitution by changing how the Governor and other statewide elected officials are elected. Currently, the Constitution requires candidates to win both a majority of the popular vote (the total votes cast by individuals) and a majority of "electoral votes," which are determined by votes within legislative districts. This resolution would eliminate the electoral vote requirement and instead stipulate that the candidate receiving a majority of the total votes cast in the general election is elected. If no candidate achieves a majority, a runoff election would be held, as determined by state law. This change would also repeal existing sections of the Constitution that outline the process for the House of Representatives to elect the Governor if no candidate meets the current requirements.
