Bill Summary
Relative to consumer rights of renters
AI Summary
This bill aims to strengthen consumer rights for renters in several ways. First, it specifies that the rental fee can only be paid by the landlord and cannot be transferred to the tenant. Second, it expands the definition of "lessor" to include agents acting on behalf of the landlord. Third, it prohibits landlords or their agents from charging tenants or prospective tenants various supplemental fees, such as for background checks, credit checks, or cleaning, with the exception of a reasonable brokerage fee. Finally, the bill restricts landlords from requiring tenants to sign a new lease more than three months before the end of their current lease.
