This bill requires that contributions made to a member of the New York State legislature for the purpose of funding the member's legal defense in a civil or criminal action be subject to the same monetary limitations and disclosure requirements as campaign contributions under the election law. The bill defines "contribution" broadly to include any gift, subscription, advance, or deposit of money or other thing of value, as well as loans not made in the regular course of business. The bill also requires that anonymous contributions received for a member's legal defense be paid over to the state comptroller unless the identity of the contributor becomes known.
