This bill aims to ensure access to addiction services by amending a section of Massachusetts law. The key provisions are: (1) individuals can be committed to a secure facility approved by the Department of Public Health or Department of Mental Health, but not a jail or correctional facility, for addiction treatment; (2) if the court finds the only appropriate setting is a secure facility, the individual may be committed to the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Bridgewater or other designated facility, but only if they are already committed to a correctional facility under a separate criminal case; and (3) within one year, all men not currently committed to a correctional facility under a separate criminal case must be relocated to a facility licensed or approved by the Department of Public Health or Department of Mental Health that is not a correctional facility or jail.
