This bill establishes the New York State COVID-19 Health Care Worker Loan Forgiveness Program, which forgives up to $20,000 in student loan debt for certain health care workers who provided medical care during the COVID-19 state of emergency. Eligible applicants include nurses, medical assistants, emergency medical technicians, and other healthcare professionals who worked in hospitals, doctor's offices, nursing homes, or other healthcare facilities during the COVID-19 state of emergency declared in March 2020. The program provides up to $5,000 per year for 4 years for those with a bachelor's degree, and up to $2,500 per year for 4 years for those without a bachelor's degree, as long as the award does not exceed the recipient's remaining student loan balance.
