This bill amends the Texas Family Code to establish a policy of encouraging parents to share equally in the rights and duties of raising their child after separation or divorce. It requires courts to enter an "equal parenting order" when appointing parents as joint managing conservators, unless the court determines such an order is not in the best interest of the child. The equal parenting order must provide each parent with possession of the child for a nearly equal number of days per year, alternating the parent with the greater number of days annually. The bill applies to pending and future suits affecting the parent-child relationship, but does not constitute a material change in circumstances to warrant modifying existing court orders.
