This bill amends the Civil Practices and Remedies Code to prohibit the suspension of laws protecting religious freedom and the closure of places of worship during a disaster, as defined under the Government Code. It defines "place of worship" as a building or grounds where religious activities are conducted, and "public official" as any elected or appointed officer, employee, or agent of the state or any political subdivision. The bill also provides that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (Chapter 110 of the Civil Practices and Remedies Code) cannot be suspended during a disaster and that government agencies or public officials cannot order the closure of places of worship. Additionally, individuals whose free exercise of religion has been substantially burdened in violation of these provisions can assert that violation as a defense in judicial or administrative proceedings.
