Bill Summary

AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; REQUIRING THAT EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT EMPLOY A MINIMUM OF ONE FULL-TIME SCHOOL NURSE; PROVIDING EXCEPTIONS; PROVIDING RULEMAKING AUTHORITY.

AI Summary

This bill requires each school district in New Mexico to employ at least one full-time school nurse, unless the state Department of Education grants a waiver to a rural district with fewer than 250 students that can demonstrate it can effectively meet student health needs through a part-time nurse or is unable to hire or contract with a qualified nurse. The bill also gives the Department rulemaking authority to implement these requirements and defines a "school nurse" as a registered nurse licensed by the state to provide school nursing services.
