This bill creates a new business license for wilderness therapy programs in Washington state. Wilderness therapy programs are a form of behavioral health treatment that takes place in a non-traditional setting, using peer groups, skill-building, and experiential learning challenges along with more traditional therapy techniques. The bill requires these programs to provide behavioral health treatment delivered by licensed professionals, and to help participants develop social connections and facilitate family reintegration. The Department of Health is directed to establish rules for licensed wilderness therapy programs by December 31, 2022, based on regulations in other states with mature wilderness therapy programs, and to consider strategies for making the programs more affordable through insurance coverage.
