Bill Summary

AN ACT RELATING TO NURSING; PROVIDING FOR AN INDEPENDENT ROLE FOR CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETISTS.

AI Summary

This bill allows certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) to practice independently or in collaboration with other healthcare providers, rather than requiring them to practice in an interdependent role under the direction of a licensed physician, osteopathic physician, dentist, or podiatrist. The bill also grants CRNAs prescriptive authority for certain drugs and controlled substances within their scope of practice, and requires the New Mexico Board of Nursing to adopt rules for a prescriptive authority formulary for CRNAs in collaboration with the New Mexico Medical Board. The bill also establishes an expedited licensing process for CRNAs licensed in other states.
