This bill establishes new standards for civics education in Indiana. It requires the state board of education, in coordination with the Department of Education, to establish civics education standards by July 1, 2022. These standards cannot be changed without express authorization from the General Assembly. The bill also establishes the Indiana Civic Education Commission, which is responsible for discussing and reviewing best practices for civics education, making recommendations for statewide implementation, and providing guidance to the state. Additionally, the bill requires each school corporation, charter school, and state-accredited nonpublic school to have students successfully complete a one-semester civics education course in grades 6, 7, or 8 starting in the 2023-2024 school year.
