Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the tax law, in relation to establishing a tax credit for the adoption of pets
AI Summary
This bill amends the tax law to establish a tax credit of up to $125 per pet for individuals who adopt pets from qualifying animal shelters, such as pounds, humane societies, or animal protective associations. The credit can be claimed for pet adoptions in taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2023. The bill defines a "pet" as any dog, cat, or other domesticated animal kept primarily for companionship, and a "qualifying animal shelter" as a facility that offers pets for adoption through an established program. To be eligible, individuals must provide proof of pet ownership in the form of an adoption agreement from a qualifying shelter.
