This bill amends the Criminal Procedure Law to allow courts to confer youthful offender status upon the conviction of an eligible youth for a misdemeanor, regardless of whether the conviction was in a local criminal court. Previously, youthful offender status was only available for eligible youths convicted in local criminal courts. The bill also removes the requirement that the eligible youth have no prior convictions in order to receive youthful offender status for a misdemeanor conviction. This change is intended to provide greater opportunities for eligible youths to avoid having a criminal record for certain misdemeanor convictions.
