This bill would amend the Education Code to include "political affiliation" as a protected characteristic for the purposes of prohibiting discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying in public schools. Specifically, it would require schools to adopt policies and procedures for receiving and investigating complaints related to political affiliation, in addition to the existing protected characteristics such as disability, gender, race, and religion. The bill also includes provisions to ensure that complainants are protected from retaliation and that their identities remain confidential. If the Commission on State Mandates determines that the bill imposes state-mandated costs, the state would be required to provide reimbursement to local agencies and school districts.
