Legislative Counsel's Digest: Under existing law, Nevada Day is October 31, but the legal holiday is 1 observed on the last Friday in October. (NRS 236.015) Section 1of this bill 2 provides, instead, that the legal holiday of Nevada Day is October 31. Under 3 section 1: (1) if October 31 falls on a Sunday, the legal holiday is observed on the 4 following Monday; or (2) if October 31 falls on a Saturday, the legal holiday is 5 observed on the Friday preceding. Section 2of this bill makes conforming changes 6 relating to certain offices that may remain open on the day that Nevada Day is 7 observed. 8 SENATE AND ASSEMBLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. NRS 236.015 is hereby amended to read as follows: 236.015 1. The following days are declared to be legal 2 holidays for state, county and city governmental offices: 3 January 1 (New Year s Day) 5 Martin Luther King, Jr. s birthday is on January 15 but is to 6 be observed on the third Monday in January 7 Washington s birthday is on February 22 but is to be 8 observed on the third Monday in February 9 Last Monday in May (Memorial Day) 10 July 4 (Independence Day) 1 First Monday in September (Labor Day) 2 Nevada Day is October 31 but is to be observed on the last 3 Friday in October (Nevada Day) November 11 (Veterans Day) 5 Fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving Day) 6 Friday following the fourth Thursday in November (Family 7 Day) 8 December 25 (Christmas Day) 9 Any day that may be appointed by the President of the United 10 States for public fast, thanksgiving or as a legal holiday 11 except for any Presidential appointment of the fourth 12 Monday in October as Veterans Day. 13 2. Except as otherwise provided by NRS 293.560 and 15 293C.527, all state, county and city offices, courts, public schools 16 and the Nevada System of Higher Education must close on the legal 17 holidays enumerated in subsection 1 unless in the case of appointed 18 holidays all or a part thereof are specifically exempted. 19 3. If January 1, July 4, October 31, November 11 or December 20 25 falls upon a: 21 (a) Sunday, the Monday following must be observed as a legal 22 holiday. 23 (b) Saturday, the Friday preceding must be observed as a legal 24 holiday. 25
