This bill establishes a grant program to support the establishment, improvement, or expansion of schools of medicine and osteopathic medicine in medically underserved areas or health professional shortage areas. The Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Health Resources and Services Administration, can award grants to institutions of higher education (including consortia) for these purposes. Priority is given to institutions that propose to establish new medical schools or branch campuses in areas without an existing medical school, as well as minority-serving institutions. Grant funds can be used for recruiting and retaining students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds, developing curricula focused on care for rural and underserved populations, and supporting the planning, construction, and accreditation of new medical schools or branch campuses. The bill also requires reporting on the program's outcomes, including the demographics and career paths of students who graduate from the supported schools or branch campuses.
