This bill, known as the Rest Period for Workers Act, requires employers to provide a 30-minute meal or rest period for employees who work more than 5 consecutive hours. Employers cannot require employees to remain at their workstations during these breaks, and the Secretary of Labor and Industry can grant exceptions to the 30-minute requirement if it creates an unnecessary hardship for the employer. The bill applies to various types of employers, but excludes police, fire departments, and emergency medical service providers. The act takes effect immediately upon passage.
