This bill allows a court to issue an emergency protection order upon finding that a person poses an imminent risk of harm to themselves or others if allowed to purchase or possess a firearm. The bill authorizes family members, household members, intimate partners, or law enforcement officers to petition for such an order. The order prohibits the respondent from purchasing or possessing any firearm for up to one year, and requires the respondent to surrender any firearms in their possession within 48 hours. Violations of the order are punishable as a Class A misdemeanor. The bill also requires the administrative office of the courts to develop standard forms for these emergency protection orders.
