This bill revises laws related to the relocation of grizzly bears in Montana. It amends existing state law to prohibit the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks from relocating grizzly bears listed under the federal Endangered Species Act, except to a previously approved release site or in response to a conflict outside of a federal recovery zone. The bill also establishes a state policy to manage grizzly bears as a species in need of management to avoid conflicts with humans and livestock, and to use proactive management approaches, including trapping and lethal measures, to control grizzly bear distribution and prevent conflicts. The bill would take effect on March 1, 2022.
