This Resolution requests that public utilities, which are companies providing essential services like electricity, water, and telephone, offer a fifty percent discount on their rates to customers who are retired senior citizens. This measure is proposed because many retired seniors live on fixed incomes and are finding it increasingly difficult to afford rising utility costs, impacting their quality of life. The Public Utilities Commission, a regulatory body overseeing these utilities, is also asked to review the actions taken by the utilities in response to this request and to determine if further laws are needed to ensure these discounts are provided. The Commission must then report its findings and any legislative proposals to the Legislature before the 2023 session begins.
