This Concurrent Resolution officially establishes a sister-state relationship between the State of Hawaii, United States of America, and the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Portugal, a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. This action is taken to foster international relations and cultural exchange, building upon Hawaii's historical practice of forming such partnerships, with Madeira being its first European sister-state. The resolution highlights the deep historical ties between Hawaii and Madeira, stemming from the arrival of Madeiran immigrants in the late 19th century who significantly contributed to Hawaiian culture, including the development of the ukulele and Portuguese sausage, and the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) tradition. The Hawaii Sister-State Committee, responsible for evaluating and recommending these relationships, has endorsed this initiative, believing it will enhance tourism, strengthen cultural and historical connections, and promote international goodwill and fellowship. Certified copies of this resolution will be sent to various officials in both the United States and Portugal to formalize the agreement.
