This bill establishes the nurse loan repayment program, which authorizes the commissioner to award loan repayment awards of up to $150,000 over five years to registered professional nurses or licensed practical nurses who agree to practice for at least five years in an underserved area or nursing home. The bill also allows the commissioner to provide these loan repayment awards to hospitals and other healthcare providers to use as part of their recruitment packages. The awards can only be used to repay outstanding student loans, and recipients who practice for less than two years in the designated areas must repay the funds. The commissioner can also apply these funds as matching funds for federal grants to assist states in operating loan repayment programs.
