This Resolution urges each county to take action against the growing number of illegal vacation rentals, which are housing units rented for less than thirty days without a proper county permit. These unpermitted rentals often avoid paying taxes, such as property taxes, transient accommodations taxes, and general excise taxes, by not complying with zoning requirements and potentially misusing homeowner exemptions, thereby forcing other taxpayers to subsidize their operations. To address this, the Resolution proposes that counties consider implementing expedited foreclosures on properties with over $5,000 in overdue county and state taxes, impose higher minimum fines to deter repeat offenders, and avoid reducing fines for those who violate the rules. The Resolution also calls for certified copies to be sent to the Director of Taxation and the mayor of each county.
