This Resolution requests that the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) provide a detailed report to the Hawaii State Legislature regarding its expenditures from the Works of Art Special Fund specifically for the curation and preservation of Native Hawaiian art. The report should include the total amount spent on Native Hawaiian art, the number of Native Hawaiian art pieces acquired, the percentage of all art collected by the SFCA that is Native Hawaiian art, the average cost per Native Hawaiian art piece, and the overall percentage of the fund's acquisition costs attributed to Native Hawaiian art. The SFCA is required to submit this report to the Legislature at least twenty days before the start of the 2023 Regular Session. The resolution highlights concerns that current SFCA strategic priorities and fund usage may not adequately support Native Hawaiian culture, particularly traditional practices like performing arts, and that there is a need to protect Native Hawaiian cultural heritage from misappropriation.
